Homemade

Unfortunately these are not my pictures but holy crap I wish they were.  These are homemade thin mints y'all!  HOMEMADE.

Jon and I are planning on baking up some treats for the wedding and have been tossing around different recipes back and forth (actually it's more like I find something that looks awesome and send it to him and he responds with "YES!!!").  This is the latest recipe we've decided to try.

So far, the "Make to try before baking a crap ton of stuff before the wedding" list consists of three different cupcake recipes, a cake recipe, and now these homemade thin mints.  My baking prowess has weakened over the last year but I'm ready to get back into it.  Dessert party in the making?  Perhaps.  Someone has to eat these sweets and tell me what they think before we decide to serve them at the wedding, right?  Right.

The recipe can be found here.

On Being Mindful

I had a conversation with a friend on the walk back from another friend's birthday party Saturday evening.  She was telling me about how yoga and meditation has really helped her in the past couple of months.  I was interested in hearing what she had to say because I've been curious about meditation but the few times that I tried it I didn't really know what I was doing.  Years ago another friend of mine recommended meditation to me.  I was surprised that it was something that he was doing but he told me how much it had helped with relieving his stress and his daily anxiety.

I don't think I'm a particularly anxious person but I definitely have been feeling a little off in the past couple of months.  I don't know if it's a seasonal thing or maybe just a result of living in this very fast paced and over stimulating environment.  I can't really articulate exactly what it is that I'm feeling.  It's just a mood that strikes every now and again that makes me feel slightly off and weird in my body.  Does this make any sense?

I went for a run over the Pulaski Bridge on a sunny afternoon and also took a couple yoga classes this weekend.  I kept thinking about what my friend had talked about, how being present and focusing awareness in one's body helped her to feel a stillness in her mind.  In my classes I really focused on my breathing, on feeling the deep stretches in my body and muscles that allowed me to literally release the tension that I was holding.  I'm not really sure what this is going to lead to.  I'm definitely interested in learning more about meditation if only to try it with real intention and see what happens.  However, I have so little time as it is to do everything during the week that I wonder when I'll find the time.  But I guess that's part of it.

I wonder if one can meditate on the subway...

Made in Brooklyn

Lots of good stuff this weekend.  The best part?  Having a lazy Sunday with a few of our friends at the Brooklyn Brewery.  We'll definitely be back.

In the Works

via Refinery 29

It's only Wednesday but I'm thinking about the weekend.  Jon will be back in Brooklyn tomorrow evening and we have a slew of activities planned.  The best part is that it's all pretty much in our neighborhood.

Friday we will be meeting up with a group of our friends at WORD on Franklin for Just Working On My Breakup

"Just Working On My Novel returns from winter hibernation with a freshly broken heart! For this installment, we're nodding towards Valentine's Day and flipping it off by asking for your sad stories, your breakup stories, your humiliating stores of love gone bad. Bonus points if your story ends hilariously instead of tragically (and triple points for both). Memoir and fiction welcome, with a ten-minute time limit. February's host is the esteemed and in-freaking-credible Jean Grae: rapper, singer, writer, and probably chef, too. RSVP in advance to read to russ@russcomm.net. Bring: yourself, a bottle of wine, your friends. You can RSVP on Facebook too, if you just want us to save you a chair."

Saturday Jon and I will be taking a breakdancing class at Human at Ease.  Lisa and I have been going there for the past few weeks for some of their fitness classes and also had a personal training session.  The staff is really friendly and genuine.  The space is gorgeous and pleasant.  Also, they will work your ass OUT.  :)

Sunday we'll be hitting up the Brooklyn Brewery during the day for Smorgasbrewery, a weekly collection of an ever rotating list of vendors who participate in the summer's Smorgasburg.  There are also free tours of the brewery every hour.  I'm looking forward to trying their new brew, Mary's Maple Porter

Later that evening we'll be heading over to Union Pool to see Fred Armisen's show, "Fred Armisen's Playlist Live."  No idea what to expect but I'm sure it will be ridiculous.

So that is what has been on my mind since this morning.  From now until tomorrow evening when Jon gets into town I will somehow have to manage getting the apartment in order (it looks like a crazy woman moved in - when I'm busy the apartment turns into a wreck!), get some exercise in, and do a little studying.  If I actually get all of this done by the time Jon gets home I will be very impressed with myself.  We shall see.

From My Mother

Lace from my mother's veil is now on display in my home, ready for that big party happening later this year.

This wedding thing has made me a bit emotional.  Not from stress but from being aware of how our family is growing, noticing how my family truly cares and loves Jon, and feeling overwhelmed at the happiness I see in my parents' faces.  I get the sense that they trust Jon, that they believe in this life he and I are creating.  It's a pretty awesome thing to witness.

Quick Notes

You can buy this print here.

I got so much done this weekend while in Ohio and also got to spend some quality time with my family and friends.  There are great things happening for so many of my loved ones.  It's exciting to see everything unfold.

As far as wedding stuff, Jon and I got a lot done.  One of the two dresses that I had ordered and shipped to Columbus turned out to be the perfect dress.  I am grateful that my mother, sister in law, best friend, and myself were all able to avoid the tedium/torture of going to a bridal boutique and instead got to hang out and share the delicious Korean food my mom had brought with her from Cleveland.  My mother also brought the veil and train that she wore for her wedding.  With my mom's blessing, I'm going to take apart the veil (she got married in the 70's and the veil is really, really poofy) and make it into a something that is more suited for me.  There are also bits of French lace that I think I'm going to incorporate into the bouquets and boutonnieres.

School started for me at the beginning of this week.  It's really nice to be in the city on a regular basis but I find my fellow students a little intimidating.  They are all really, REALLY well dressed as one would expect from students who go to a school for art, fashion, and design.  I walked by a few guys who were playing hackey sack (!!!) in tailored suit jackets and really nice shoes.  There are tons of native-Korean fashionistas everywhere on campus tottering around in crazy heels.  Oh yes - and on my first day of class Tim Gunn walked by me on 7th Avenue.  He is very handsome, very trim, and shorter than I thought he would be in person.  I am proud that I didn't do a crazy double-take but instead played it cool and glanced at him as he walked by.

So that's it for now!  More soon.
